ZACH MECHAM

HOW I BECAME A ZACH OF ALL TRADES

It all started in elementary school, when I was asked to be a local ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Before I could do long division, I found myself speaking on television and to crowds of 100s of people. At the age of 13, I was asked to be the ambassador for the state of Iowa. This required me to travel around the state and deliver speeches on a regular basis.

By the time I had reached high school, I’d realized that I had a knack for storytelling and sought out opportunities to improve. I spent the rest of my high school career seeking out these opportunities through Speech, Drama, leadership conferences, guest writing opportunities and classes.

After graduating high school, I went on to create written content for a few nationally-read blogs as a guest blogger and run a news website that had over 1,000 regular readers. I did a brief stint as a stand-up comedian and improv actor, which led me to a major in theatre. Seeing the impact of my performances made me realize that if I seriously worked to master the craft of storytelling, I could pursue it as a career.

I then took these storytelling skills to Disability Rights Iowa, where I learned to write, shoot, and edit daily social media content. This is where I discovered my passion for photography and video, which gave me new outlets for sharing stories online. I have since created social media content for The Red Cross, Upgrade Medicaid, The Johnson County ADA Celebration, The Iowa United Spinal Association and various consulting clients.

In December of 2017, I graduated from Drake University with a degree in English, speech, and theatre education. Before moving forward with my career, I decided to dedicate 2 years to national service, helping to build an outreach program for The Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement. This two-year service was very rewarding for me personally and professionally because I’ve always been passionate about nonprofit work and community-oriented service. This experience guided the development of my business and helped me come up with a model that allowed me to serve these kinds of organizations.

This unique collection of experiences has allowed me to serve the organizations I love by doing the work I love. I am able to share the stories of community-centered businesses and nonprofits through several different mediums. I feel at home thinking outside the box, experimenting with new ways to improve my craft, and I love working with people who are as passionate about their work as I am.

I want nothing more than to amplify the reach and impact of organizations that are already doing  great things.
If you need it written, I can write it. If you need it shot, I can shoot it. If you need it designed, I can design it. I’m a Zach of All Trades.

Zach's Digital Storytelling talent and skill is a big reason that #UpgradeMedicaid has gotten so much legitimate attention and respect. He hones in on the person and their emotion and turns it in to engagement. Zach has turned individual videos into compelling campaigns that have empowered the disability community and allies to share their voices and create change, which is especially impressive this year with the pandemic and so much division

"Zach was highly recommended to me by a friend who said he is excellent at what he does. Zach exceeded my expectations! He listened to my story, formulated a plan, and executed the plan with perfection. I am extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend him. Thank you for all the hard work on my project.

I was impressed by the work which Zach did on the virtual Americans with Disabilities Act celebration in October 2020, so we decided to hire him to provide marketing and technical support for our Seeking Opportunities for an Advocacy Revolution (SOAR) conference this September. Zach went above and beyond what was expected of him, coming up with creative suggestion after creative suggestion to market the conference and make it easy for those of us with disabilities to navigate. He's extremely easy to work with, honest, and passionate about doing the very best job for his clients.

I regularly seek advice from Zach on advertising and marketing my own business. He is building the website and designed the logo for Mecham Maintenance Service along with consulting me about social media presence and how to get my name out there. My business is growing with his help and yours could too. I strongly recommend Zach of All Trades Media.
